Waters We Fish

Guided fly fishing across Montana’s rivers, creeks, and private waters

Nelson’s Guides & Flies offers guided fly fishing on a variety of Montana waters, with each trip selected based on season, conditions, and access availability. From iconic float trips on the Yellowstone River to walk and wade fishing and limited access private spring creeks, our guides focus on matching anglers to the right water at the right time.

Not every water fishes the same every day. Our local knowledge and ranch based perspective allow us to adapt plans as conditions change, ensuring a productive and enjoyable experience while protecting the fisheries we rely on.

The Yellowstone River

Montana’s iconic free flowing river

The Yellowstone River is the backbone of our guided fishing season and one of the most iconic fly fishing rivers in the West. Flowing through Paradise Valley beneath the Absaroka Range, the Yellowstone offers diverse water, seasonal variety, and a true Montana float fishing experience.

Our guided trips on the Yellowstone River are shaped by conditions and time of year. From dry fly fishing during prolific hatches to nymphing and streamer fishing as conditions change, the river provides opportunity throughout the season. Float trips allow us to cover water efficiently while adjusting tactics to match the day.

Trip locations and methods on the Yellowstone River vary daily based on flows, weather, and fishing conditions.

Walk and Wade Rivers

Technical fishing on Montana rivers and creeks

Walk and wade fishing offers a different pace and a more hands on approach to fly fishing. These trips focus on reading water, careful presentation, and understanding how trout use structure and current. For anglers who enjoy being in the water and slowing things down, walk and wade days are a great fit.

Our guides select walk and wade locations based on conditions, access, and angler experience. Depending on the season, this may include sections of rivers or smaller creeks that provide excellent fishing opportunities when conditions are right.

  • Slower pace with focused instruction
  • Emphasis on reading water and presentation
  • Access to select rivers and creeks
  • Well suited for learning and skill development

Private Spring Creek Fishing

Limited access fishing on protected private water

Private spring creek fishing offers a technical and intimate fly fishing experience in a carefully managed setting. These clear, consistent waters require thoughtful presentation, patience, and attention to detail, rewarding anglers who enjoy a more deliberate approach.

Access to our private spring creek is intentionally limited to protect the fishery and preserve the quality of each day on the water. Spring creek fishing is available only to guided guests and is planned in advance based on availability, conditions, and overall trip goals.

  • Limited access private water
  • Technical fishing with selective trout
  • Clear, consistent water conditions
  • A slower pace focused on precision and learning

Private spring creek access is limited to six anglers per day and is available only to guided guests.

Spring creek fishing cannot always be booked online and may require advance planning.

Access, Conditions, and Planning

The right water depends on timing, conditions, and availability

Fishing conditions in Montana change daily based on flows, weather, seasonal patterns, and fishing pressure. Because of this, not every water is available or ideal every day. Our guides select waters carefully to provide the best possible experience while protecting the fisheries we rely on.

Some trips and waters require advance planning and limited access coordination. Rather than offering a fixed menu of options, we work with anglers to choose the right water at the right time based on current conditions and individual goals.

What this means for your trip:

Water selection is based on daily conditions & season

Not all waters are available every day

Private spring creek access is limited & planned in advance

Some guided trips cannot be booked instantly

Our team helps match anglers to the best available option
